British Columbia takes $2.4 billion from gas and oil auctions

Natural gas and oil exploration companies spent a record $2.4 billion locking in land positions in British Columbia for the 2008-09 fiscal year, the provincial government reported on Thursday, double last year’s record, it set new records in every category that the B.C. Energy Ministry tracks for gas and oil exploration rights in B.C.
The ministry said in a press release that seven “key” auction records were set, and that eight of the all-time 20 highest monthly auction returns occurred in 2008-09.
