27 Firms to Bid in Airwaves Auction

Published April 1st, 2008

Canada will let 27 companies bid for wireless airwaves at a spectrum auction in May after they met financial criteria.

The final list of qualified bidders, released today by Industry Canada, includes established wireless providers Rogers Communications Inc., Telus Corp. and BCE Inc., as well as new entrants Quebecor Media Inc. and Manitoba Telecom Services Inc.

Industry Minister Jim Prentice said in November that he would set aside some of the spectrum being sold for new entrants to make the market more competitive. The companies will take part in a mock auction from May 21 to May 23 and start actual bidding on May 27.
