Canadian art makes big prices at at Joyner Waddingtons Spring Auction of Important Canadian Art

A major canvas by A.Y. Jackson and other works by post-war Canadian Artists drew higher than expected bids Tuesday at Joyner Waddington’s Spring Auction of Important Canadian Art.

The Tuesday evening auction attracted fierce competition between bidders both in the packed auction gallery as well as international bidders participating by telephone.

“Sun Gleams Near Bic,” a large canvas by Group of Seven member A.Y. Jackson,went for $478,000, double its presale auction estimate.

Another canvas by Jackson, “Ste-Cecile De Masham, Que.,” realized $207,000, more than double its presale estimate.

A classic painting depicting children playing in the snow by William Kurelek – “Children Playing In A Snowbank” – sold for $138,000, more than three times its auction estimate.

A second Kurelek work – “Deep Snow In Canada’s North” – sold for $26,500, triple its presale estimate.

Within the first hour, the sale total exceeded $3.5 million and, by the end of the 275-lot session, the total was expected to be in excess of $5 million.

The sale finishes on Wednesday.
